Kejadian 28:14

Konteks
28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, 1  and you will spread out 2  to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another 3  using your name and that of your descendants. 4

Yesaya 43:6

Konteks

43:6 I will say to the north, ‘Hand them over!’

and to the south, ‘Don’t hold any back!’

Bring my sons from distant lands,

and my daughters from the remote regions of the earth,

Yesaya 49:6

Konteks

49:6 he says, “Is it too insignificant a task for you to be my servant,

to reestablish the tribes of Jacob,

and restore the remnant 5  of Israel? 6

I will make you a light to the nations, 7

so you can bring 8  my deliverance to the remote regions of the earth.”

Yesaya 54:2-3

Konteks

54:2 Make your tent larger,

stretch your tent curtains farther out! 9

Spare no effort,

lengthen your ropes,

and pound your stakes deep. 10

54:3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left;

your children will conquer 11  nations

and will resettle desolate cities.

Yesaya 66:18-20

Konteks
66:18 “I hate their deeds and thoughts! So I am coming 12  to gather all the nations and ethnic groups; 13  they will come and witness my splendor. 66:19 I will perform a mighty act among them 14  and then send some of those who remain to the nations – to Tarshish, Pul, 15  Lud 16  (known for its archers 17 ), Tubal, Javan, 18  and to the distant coastlands 19  that have not heard about me or seen my splendor. They will tell the nations of my splendor. 66:20 They will bring back all your countrymen 20  from all the nations as an offering to the Lord. They will bring them 21  on horses, in chariots, in wagons, on mules, and on camels 22  to my holy hill Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring offerings to the Lord’s temple in ritually pure containers.

Maleakhi 1:11

Konteks
1:11 For from the east to the west my name will be great among the nations. Incense and pure offerings will be offered in my name everywhere, for my name will be great among the nations,” 23  says the Lord who rules over all.

Markus 13:27

Konteks
13:27 Then he will send angels and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. 24

Kisah Para Rasul 28:28

Konteks

28:28 “Therefore be advised 25  that this salvation from God 26  has been sent to the Gentiles; 27  they 28  will listen!”

Efesus 3:6-8

Konteks
3:6 namely, that through the gospel 29  the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members 30  of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus. 3:7 I became a servant of this gospel 31  according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by 32  the exercise of his power. 33  3:8 To me – less than the least of all the saints 34  – this grace was given, 35  to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ

Kolose 1:6

Konteks
1:6 that has come to you. Just as in the entire world this gospel 36  is bearing fruit and growing, so it has also been bearing fruit and growing 37  among you from the first day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth.

Kolose 1:23

Konteks
1:23 if indeed you remain in the faith, established and firm, 38  without shifting 39  from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has also been preached in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become its servant.

Wahyu 7:9-10

Konteks

7:9 After these things I looked, and here was 40  an enormous crowd that no one could count, made up of persons from every nation, tribe, 41  people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb dressed in long white robes, and with palm branches in their hands. 7:10 They were shouting out in a loud voice,

“Salvation belongs to our God, 42

to the one seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

[28:14]  1 tn This is the same Hebrew word translated “ground” in the preceding verse.

[28:14]  2 tn The verb is singular in the Hebrew; Jacob is addressed as the representative of his descendants.

[28:14]  3 tn Theoretically the Niphal stem can be translated either as passive or reflexive/reciprocal. (The Niphal of “bless” is only used in formulations of the Abrahamic covenant. See Gen 12:2; 18:18; 28:14.) Traditionally the verb is taken as passive here, as if Jacob were going to be a channel or source of blessing. But in other formulations of the Abrahamic covenant (see Gen 22:18; 26:4) the Hitpael replaces this Niphal form, suggesting a translation “will bless (i.e., pronounce blessings upon) themselves/one another.” The Hitpael of “bless” is used with a reflexive/reciprocal sense in Deut 29:18; Ps 72:17; Isa 65:16; Jer 4:2. Gen 28:14 predicts that Jacob will be held up as a paradigm of divine blessing and that people will use his name in their blessing formulae (see Gen 12:2 and 18:18 as well, where Abram/Abraham receives this promise). For examples of blessing formulae utilizing an individual as an example of blessing see Gen 48:20 and Ruth 4:11.

[28:14]  4 tn Heb “and they will pronounce blessings by you, all the families of the earth, and by your offspring.”

[49:6]  5 tn Heb “the protected [or “preserved”] ones.”

[49:6]  6 sn The question is purely rhetorical; it does not imply that the servant was dissatisfied with his commission or that he minimized the restoration of Israel.

[49:6]  7 tn See the note at 42:6.

[49:6]  8 tn Heb “be” (so KJV, ASV); CEV “you must take.”

[54:2]  9 tn Heb “the curtains of our dwelling places let them stretch out.”

[54:2]  10 tn Heb “your stakes strengthen.”

[54:3]  11 tn Or “take possession of”; NAB “shall dispossess.”

[66:18]  12 tc The Hebrew text reads literally “and I, their deeds and their thoughts, am coming.” The syntax here is very problematic, suggesting that the text may have suffered corruption. Some suggest that the words “their deeds and their thoughts” have been displaced from v. 17. This line presents two primary challenges. In the first place, the personal pronoun “I” has no verb after it. Most translations insert “know” for the sake of clarity (NASB, NRSV, NLT, ESV). The NIV has “I, because of their actions and their imaginations…” Since God’s “knowledge” of Israel’s sin occasions judgment, the verb “hate” is an option as well (see above translation). The feminine form of the next verb (בָּאָה, baah) could be understood in one of two ways. One could provide an implied noun “time” (עֵת, ’et) and render the next line “the time is coming/has come” (NASB, ESV). One could also emend the feminine verb to the masculine בָּא (ba’) and have the “I” at the beginning of the line govern this verb as well (for the Lord is speaking here): “I am coming” (cf. NIV, NCV, NRSV, TEV, NLT).

[66:18]  13 tn Heb “and the tongues”; KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV “and tongues.”

[66:19]  14 tn Heb “and I will set a sign among them.” The precise meaning of this statement is unclear. Elsewhere “to set a sign” means “perform a mighty act” (Ps 78:43; Jer 32:20), “make [someone] an object lesson” (Ezek 14:8), and “erect a [literal] standard” (Ps 74:4).

[66:19]  15 tn Some prefer to read “Put” (i.e., Libya).

[66:19]  16 sn That is, Lydia (in Asia Minor).

[66:19]  17 tn Heb “drawers of the bow” (KJV and ASV both similar).

[66:19]  18 sn Javan is generally identified today as Greece (so NIV, NCV, NLT).

[66:19]  19 tn Or “islands” (NIV).

[66:20]  20 tn Heb “brothers” (so NIV); NCV “fellow Israelites.”

[66:20]  21 tn The words “they will bring them” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[66:20]  22 tn The precise meaning of this word is uncertain. Some suggest it refers to “chariots.” See HALOT 498 s.v. *כִּרְכָּרָה.

[1:11]  23 sn My name will be great among the nations. In what is clearly a strongly ironic shift of thought, the Lord contrasts the unbelief and virtual paganism of the postexilic community with the conversion and obedience of the nations that will one day worship the God of Israel.

[13:27]  24 tn Or “of the sky”; the Greek word οὐρανός (ouranos) may be translated “sky” or “heaven,” depending on the context.

[28:28]  25 tn Grk “Therefore let it be known to you.”

[28:28]  26 tn Or “of God.”

[28:28]  27 sn The term Gentiles is in emphatic position in the Greek text of this clause. Once again there is the pattern: Jewish rejection of the gospel leads to an emphasis on Gentile inclusion (Acts 13:44-47).

[28:28]  28 tn Grk “they also.”

[3:6]  29 sn The phrase through the gospel is placed last in the sentence in Greek for emphasis. It has been moved forward for clarity.

[3:6]  30 tn Grk “and fellow members.”

[3:7]  31 tn Grk “of which I was made a minister,” “of which I became a servant.”

[3:7]  32 tn Grk “according to.”

[3:7]  33 sn On the exercise of his power see 1:19-20.

[3:8]  34 sn In Pauline writings saints means any true believer. Thus for Paul to view himself as less than the least of all the saints is to view himself as the most unworthy object of Christ’s redemption.

[3:8]  35 sn The parallel phrases to proclaim and to enlighten which follow indicate why God’s grace was manifested to Paul. Grace was not something just to be received, but to be shared with others (cf. Acts 13:47).

[1:6]  36 tn Grk “just as in the entire world it is bearing fruit.” The antecedent (“the gospel”) of the implied subject (“it”) of ἐστιν (estin) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:6]  37 tn Though the participles are periphrastic with the present tense verb ἐστίν (estin), the presence of the temporal indicator “from the day” in the next clause indicates that this is a present tense that reaches into the past and should be translated as “has been bearing fruit and growing.” For a discussion of this use of the present tense, see ExSyn 519-20.

[1:23]  38 tn BDAG 276 s.v. ἑδραῖος suggests “firm, steadfast.”

[1:23]  39 tn BDAG 639 s.v. μετακινέω suggests “without shifting from the hope” here.

[7:9]  40 tn The phrase “and here was” expresses the sense of καὶ ἰδού (kai idou).

[7:9]  41 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated before each of the following categories, since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

[7:10]  42 tn The dative here has been translated as a dative of possession.
